This week, our subject is Nick Rauen from Champions Shamrocks...
Q. How long has the nucleus of your team been together?
A. We have been playing pick up games for almost 3 years. We didn't make it to organized flag football until June, when we joined a league with Cincy Flag.
Q. I saw you guys jumping up and shoulder bumping, giving high fives, etc after your week one victory. Why were you guys so excited?
A. well, we didn't have a whole lot of success last time. We are just happy to be competitive. At the same time , we have been on the other end of a game like that and to be honest we were all glad it was them not us.
Q. In your last session playing in the league you played in an open division with some bona fide heavyweights. There was no Comp. & Rec. division separating your team from the likes of the Fighting Armadillos and Curious George. You took many MMA beat downs. What did you as coach learn and what did you have to deal with week in and week out from your players?
A. We learned how the really good teams do it. The biggest thing I took from the last session we played was do the little things right first. Then you can focus on the big details. Also try not to have as many guys going both ways.
Q. Rule of thumb is that in the first couple weeks of a season the offensive production generally lags behind the defensive production. Your team posted the highest scoring total in week one. Why did you guys get on track so early and often?
A. Well in our time away from the league, we talked about making our offense more simple. By using the same guys in the same positions every time and having specific people sub at each position, we were able to get on the same page. So I guess we just got more organized.
Q. Who was your team's mvp in week one?
A. I think our Offensive Line was the most valuable player. Yes, I think we have guys who can do big things with the ball, but giving our Quarerback the time to find an open man was our biggest improvement.
Q. How many guys and what positions were you missing?
A. We had 2 of our Offensive lineman that were not able to make it.
Q. What sort of impact will your guys that were MIA have on your team?
A. They are both good lineman, so I think our pass protection should even be better than it was.
Q. If you win the rec division your team will be slated to play in the comp division next session. You would follow in the footsteps of Curious George who once played rec. Is it a team goal to be playing in the higher division next session?
A. It should always be a goal in any sporting event to be the best at your level. We would love to have the challenge of moving up if we get to that point. Right now we are looking at getting better for next week. After putting up some big numbers, its easy to lose focus and perspective. I served all my guys some "humble pie" so we stay on task. They don't crown champs after week 1!
